Don’t Forget Your Umbrella – Rainy Season Has Begun in Japan!

June in Japan means one thing – here comes the rainy season! This time is called tsuyu in Japanese. The skies turn gray, the air gets warm and sticky, and raindrops fall almost every day. If it’s your first time experiencing it, you might not enjoy it at first. But people in Japan know how to make the most of the rain!

日本では6月といえば梅雨の季節です！日本語で「梅雨（つゆ）」と呼ばれます。空は灰色になり、空気は暖かくてジメジメし、雨がほぼ毎日降ります。初めて経験する人にとっては、あまり楽しくないかもしれません。でも、日本の人たちは雨の楽しみ方をよく知っています！

Umbrellas are everywhere! You could even say Japan has a fascination with them. Big ones, small ones, clear ones, and cute ones with flowers or animal prints – umbrellas here are not just useful, they’re stylish too! Many people carry umbrellas that show their personality. And don’t worry if you forget yours—convenience stores sell them everywhere!

日本では傘があちこちにあります！日本人は傘にこだわりがあると言えるかもしれません。大きな傘、小さな傘、透明の傘、花柄や動物柄のかわいい傘など、実用的だけでなく、おしゃれな傘がたくさんあります。多くの人が自分の個性を表す傘を持っています。もし忘れても大丈夫！コンビニで簡単に買えますよ。

Children wear bright raincoats and splash through puddles in colorful boots. Some families hang little paper dolls called teru teru bōzu by the window, hoping they’ll bring sunny weather.

子どもたちは明るい色のレインコートを着て、カラフルな長靴で水たまりを楽しそうに歩きます。家や学校では「てるてる坊主」と呼ばれる小さな紙の人形を窓辺に飾ることもあります。晴れの日が来るように願っているのです。

The rainy season helps flowers bloom and rice grow, so it’s a very important time of year. And even though the skies are gray, the colorful umbrellas make the season feel bright—and even fun!

梅雨は花を咲かせ、田んぼの稲を育てる大切な季節です。空は灰色でも、カラフルな傘が街を明るくし、梅雨も楽しく感じられるかもしれません！
